The Aheer legacy begins with Mr Sivambar Aheer and Mrs Ramdasia Aheer, who arrived in South Africa as indentured labourers. With resilience and determination, they laid the foundation for a future built on hard work, dignity, and perseverance.
After completing their indenture, the family settled in Greytown. Through small-scale farming in Vleilands, they cultivated vegetables for survival and trade-establishing an early connection between enterprise and community.
Mr Ramharack Aheer recognised the limitations of the land and relocated the family to the townlands along Cooper Street. This strategic move enabled more sustainable farming and marked the beginning of structured growth.
Driven by ambition, Ramharack Aheer built a diversified livelihood-trading fresh produce, selling timber, transporting goods, and offering agricultural services. His excellence in produce earned him recognition as the “Carrot King” in the local market.
The next generation grew up immersed in the family business. The brothers G.R.
Aheer, B.R. Aheer and D.R Aheer expanded the business into transport, timber,
and fresh produce distribution. Investments in vehicles and infrastructure enabled
wider reach and accelerated growth across the Umvoti district.
Despite social and political challenges, including forced removals, the family
adapted-relocating, rebuilding, and continuing to serve their community.
The opening of the first store at 56 Pine Street marked Aheers’ transition into formal retail, establishing a permanent presence within the Greytown community.
The launch of Aheers Multisave Supermarket solidified the brand’s position as a trusted and established retailer, serving generations of customers with quality and consistency.
Leadership evolved as the next generation joined the business, ensuring continuity while strengthening the brand’s future.
